cPanel Hosting – Logs Panel

Logs Panel

cPanel Logs

cPanel Logs

The Logs Panel in your cPanel hosting account is a great place to get data about what is going on in your account and more specifically in each of your Web sites.  Though you may be using Google analytics, the web hosting account Logs panel can give you very specific information in very great detail that can supplement what you are learning with Google analytics.

Some veterans use the raw log data as a main source of information, that is something that will be covered in another article because the raw data are hard to read and digest without some time to learn how to decipher the information.

Latest Visitors

This function shows you the last 300 people that have accessed your site. It is a great way to get an idea of who is visiting.  You see their IP address and also the different pages they visited.

Bandwidth

This feature lets you see the bandwidth usage for your site. It shows the current month’s bandwidth usage as well as your total bandwidth usage. This includes all HTTP (web) and POP (mail) bandwidth usage and may include FTP bandwidth usage if your system administrator has enabled FTP bandwidth logging.  It is a way to monitor how much of a pipeline you are using.  If things get tight, it might be time to go to a dedicated server for $20 a month rather than staying with a shared server.

Webalizer

Webalizer is a complex stats program that produces a variety of charts and graphs about who has visited your site.  It is a way of seeing how many hits and  files are served up,how many pages and visits occur on a daily and monthly basis to a particular web site.  It is a good way to get an overall picture of what is going on for a specific site in your portfolio.

Webalizer ftp

Webalizer FTP is a complex stats program that produces a variety of charts and graphs about who has visited your site using ftp protocol. This performs the same function as Webalizer only for all the ftp accounts you have set up.

Raw Access logs

Raw Access Logs allow you to see who has accessed your site without the use of graphs, charts or other graphics. You can use the Raw Access Logs menu to download a zipped version of the server’s access log for your site. This can be very useful when you need to see who is accessing your site quickly.

Error Log

This function will display the last 300 errors for your site. This can be very useful for determining what links are broken on your site, or what files do not exist that should. Checking this log frequently can help keep your site running smoothly.

Choose Log programs

This function allows you to choose what stats programs you will use when viewing site statistics, if you are allowed to do so.  Don’t worry about this function until you have more time and experience.

Awstats

Awstats produces visual statistics about visitors of your site.  This is by far one of the most useful functions.  It breaks down data by month, day, hour so you can see trends and determine your best chronological data.  It will show where your visitors are coming from, what pages they are accessing, keywords and keyword phrases used.  It will tell you which search engine bots are crawling your site, what countries of origin your visitors are coming from.

Awstats is a great way to supplement other analytics you are using and is very easy to understand.  You should definitely take a look and try it out for yourself.

Conclusion

The cPanel logs panel is a great resource to use and find out how your web sites are doing.  The data will certainly help you determine what is working and what is not. Use it along with some of the other tools at your disposal like Google analytics.  Best of all it comes at no additional cost to your monthly subscription fee to your web host.

I hope this information has been helpful. You can check out my video to see the cPanel and how

cPanel Hosting – Files Panel

Files Panel

cPanel Files Panel

cPanel Files Panel

The files panel is one of the panels you will be spending a lot of time on so this article is designed to introduce you to the different functions of the 11 icons that you will fine there.

In some Files panel configurations you could have more options, up to 14 in all, but for the purposes of this article, I will talk about the 11 basic icons you will find there.

Backup

Backups allow you to download (to your computer) a zipped copy of either you entire site (your home directory, databases, email forwarders configuration, email filters configuration) or one of the previously mentioned parts of your site. These are not automatically scheduled backups. Automatically scheduled backups need to be enabled by the server owner / administrator.

You can do a full backup of your entire site or partial backups of specific folders of the site.

I do specific back ups of different web sites.  I also know that my web host provider does global backups every Sunday, so I can always get a back up from them for a nominal fee if I need one.

Backup  Wizard

This feature allows you to download a zipped copy of your entire site or parts of it onto your computer.

The following are backed up and included in a zip file for your convenience:

  • Home Directory
  • MySQL Databases
  • Email forwarders configuration
  • Email filters configuration

This is a similar function to the previous options and offers a restore capability so you can do the restoring yourself.

File Manager

File Manager allows you to access your web host account on 4 levels.

You can access the main account that gives you the overall look at all the accounts that make up your web host environment.

You can access your Web root account.  It is know as the public_html folder. This is the folder you will be using the most as you build your business.  It holds all the folders of the web sites you will be creating.  These are the folders you will be doing a lot of work in.

Get to know this directory/folder.  It is your work horse.

Legacy File Manger

The Legacy File Manager offers file manipulation options in an older web-based interface. Users already familiar with an older version of cPanel’s File Manager may find the Legacy File Manager more comfortable.  This is for users used to the older user interface.

Web Disk

This  software offers anapplication where files can be managed using your operating system’s interface.  This means it offers a way for you to transfer files from you computer to your web host account without using File Transfer Protocol software.

Disk Space Usage

This feature displays information about how and how much disk space is being used by your websites and different folders or directories in your account.

FTP Accounts

FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol and is another method of website file management.  It is an option to Web disk and is the preferred method for a lot of people to move files between their computers and their web host accounts.

FTP Session Control

This feature displays information about and gives you control over who is connected to your account via FTP.  You can see who is accessing your account and what they are doing.  This applies to a corporate or training environment where several people may be moving data in and out of the web host account.

Anonymous FTP

This feature allows you to define how anonymous users interact with your FTP
server. This means you can allow people to access your account and load in data without having to use a password.

It is not recommended from a security standpoint.

This briefly lays out the Files panel in cPanel.  You can check my video to see how to use it in greater detail.  I hope this is helpful.  The best thing is to go in and take the time test the different options to see what they can do for you.

Learn more – cPanel Domains

cPanel Hosting – Domain Panel

cPanel Domain Panel
cPanel Hosting - Domain Panel

The  Domain Panel has four icons you want to know about and two you don’t need to use starting out.

Subdomains

The Subdomains area of cPanel allows you to create and manage subdomains. Subdomains appears as a prefix to your main domain name and point to a directory (folder) within the public_html folder.  Basically, when you open a hosting account, you open under the name of a main domain of your choice.  When you buy and register a new domain name, it will appear as a subdomain in your hosting account and appears ahead of the main domain as a URL.

www.maindomain.com (hosting main domain)

www.newdomain.com (new domain name)

www.newdomain.maindomain.com (default syntax for url)-This is what will appear in the address bar of a browser

Addon Domains

This is the section where you create Addon domains.  Some hosts do not allow Addon domains.  Find one that does.  That is why I like Hostgator.  Basically, you want to take your new domains and set them up as Addon domains so that the Address bar URL appears with your new domain name and not the prefix URL we talked about in the Subdomain above.

www.newdomain.com is what you will see in the address bar and not www.newdomain.maindomain.com.

Parked Domains

This area of cPanel allows you to create and manage parked domains.  These are domains you own and are not using so you can point them to a generic page or your main domain.

Redirects

This area allows you to point a domain to another domain or web page.  This is useful when setting up advertising campaigns and you want a domain to point to a merchant landing page or perhaps to a page you have designed.  It is a very useful tool for marketing purposes.

Simple Domain Name System Zone Editor

This area lets you add and remove certain records to the DNS system.  The DNS system is the process that transfers a domain name into an IP address or number.  Unless you are a programmer you do not need to concern yourself with area when starting out.

Advanced DNS Zone Editor

This area lets you add, edit and remove records. Again. this is not for a beginner.

This explains what the Domain Panel is and how it functions.  If you want more detailed information, check out the video.

Hope this is helpful.

Stay with it, stay well and May Your Travels Be Prosperous.

cPanel Hosting Intro

Web Host Control Panel-cPanel

Web Host

When you sign up with a Web host service provider, you will find yourself most likely coming to a page called the cPanel.

cPanel

cPanel

The control panel looks like a glob of icons at first, but if you take the time you can figure out what it all means.

cPanel Page

The page consists of two columns. The left hand column is a sidebar that gives you information about your account. There is a search box at the top, then a most visited or used box underneath that, followed by a list of all the data that pertains to the account. This sidebar gives you a quick reference view of what is going on in the account.

The second column is the wide area filled with panels. Each panel aggregates icons that perform a function in the management of your account.

There is a lot to take in and you have to take your time when getting started to see what all this means for you.

The first place to start is the preference panel because that is where you will find information that will show you how to use cPanel. There is a get started icon and a video tutorial icon that can get you information about how to work with cPanel.

cPanel Sections

The next most useful panels are the Mail panel, the Files panel, the Domains panel and the Software/Services panel. These are the work areas where you will spend most of your time when you work with your web site creation and management, so those are the ones you should get familiar with.

Take a look at the video on cPanel Intro to get a quick rundown on how to figure out the cPanel layout and that should help you get started.

With an understanding of how the cPanel works, you will be on your way to setting up web sites and managing them to profitability.
