cPanel Files Panel

The files panel is one of the panels you will be spending a lot of time on so this article is designed to introduce you to the different functions of the 11 icons that you will fine there.

In some Files panel configurations you could have more options, up to 14 in all, but for the purposes of this article, I will talk about the 11 basic icons you will find there.

Backup

Backups allow you to download (to your computer) a zipped copy of either you entire site (your home directory, databases, email forwarders configuration, email filters configuration) or one of the previously mentioned parts of your site. These are not automatically scheduled backups. Automatically scheduled backups need to be enabled by the server owner / administrator.

You can do a full backup of your entire site or partial backups of specific folders of the site.

I do specific back ups of different web sites.  I also know that my web host provider does global backups every Sunday, so I can always get a back up from them for a nominal fee if I need one.

Backup  Wizard

This feature allows you to download a zipped copy of your entire site or parts of it onto your computer.

The following are backed up and included in a zip file for your convenience:

• Home Directory
• MySQL Databases
• Email forwarders configuration
• Email filters configuration

This is a similar function to the previous options and offers a restore capability so you can do the restoring yourself.

File Manager

File Manager allows you to access your web host account on 4 levels.

You can access the main account that gives you the overall look at all the accounts that make up your web host environment.

You can access your Web root account.  It is know as the public_html folder. This is the folder you will be using the most as you build your business.  It holds all the folders of the web sites you will be creating.  These are the folders you will be doing a lot of work in.

Get to know this directory/folder.  It is your work horse.

Legacy File Manger

The Legacy File Manager offers file manipulation options in an older web-based interface. Users already familiar with an older version of cPanel’s File Manager may find the Legacy File Manager more comfortable.  This is for users used to the older user interface.

Web Disk

This  software offers anapplication where files can be managed using your operating system’s interface.  This means it offers a way for you to transfer files from you computer to your web host account without using File Transfer Protocol software.

Disk Space Usage

This feature displays information about how and how much disk space is being used by your websites and different folders or directories in your account.

FTP Accounts

FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol and is another method of website file management.  It is an option to Web disk and is the preferred method for a lot of people to move files between their computers and their web host accounts.

FTP Session Control

This feature displays information about and gives you control over who is connected to your account via FTP.  You can see who is accessing your account and what they are doing.  This applies to a corporate or training environment where several people may be moving data in and out of the web host account.

Anonymous FTP

This feature allows you to define how anonymous users interact with your FTP
server. This means you can allow people to access your account and load in data without having to use a password.

It is not recommended from a security standpoint.

This briefly lays out the Files panel in cPanel.  You can check my video to see how to use it in greater detail.  I hope this is helpful.  The best thing is to go in and take the time test the different options to see what they can do for you.
