Fomatting an External Hard Drive Manually
I got a message on my mac the other day that my internal hard drive was full. I knew something was up because things had slowed down but I wasn’t sure what it was.
Long story short I went out and bought a Western Digital 2 terabyte drive.
I ordered it online and got it in a about three days. I took it out of the box; it came with a power cord and a usb cable.
I hook it up, power up and …..nothing.
It soon becomes clear that it does not auto format and get up to speed. What a pain!
So I head online and go to the Western Digital site, enter my model information and find formating information in nano print.
Basically, it tells me to go to the Applications folder, find the Utilities folder and then find the mac Disc utility program and open it.
Then it tells you to select the Erase tab, chose the Mac Os Expander option from the drop down menu and then click the Erase button at the bottom of the page.
The program then erases and formats the drive for about a minute or so.
Then things start to happen and my newly named drive shows up on the desk top.
I have a video below that shows exactly what to do. So take a look and if this happens to you it won’t be a problem since you will know what to do.
That’s it. Stay well, stay with it and may your travels be prosperous.
