Iphone 5 – How To Fix “Cannot Get Mail” with 2 Step Verification On

How To Fix iPhone 5 Gmail Email Settings

I had this problem on my iPhone with my gmail email retrieval.

The Problem

It seems that Google 2 step verification was the source of the problem.

When I got my iPhone 5 I set up the gmail account using my name and password and everything worked fine.

Then for some reason I started getting the Cannot Get Mail message and couldn’t figure out why.

The Search

I went to YouTube and couldn’t find anything so I went to Google search and ended up on an Apple forum.

Solution 1

One of the suggestions was to turn off 2 Step Verification if you had it on.

I did just that and things were back to normal.

But there is only one hitch.

I wanted to use 2 Step Verification.

Solution 2

So I went back in and turned it on and sure enough I got the Cannot Get Mail message again.

It took me a while but I finally figured out the solution.

What you have to do is go into your 2 Step Verification account and click on the Application Specific Password link.

This will send you to the Password generator at the bottom of that page where you enter in the name of the device you want to get a password for.

In my case it was my iPhone 5.

Once it generated the long ugly password, I copied it  and then went to my iPhone.

In the iPhone I went to Settings,Mail-Contacts-Calendars,Gmail,Account to finally land on my Account Information page.

There I replaced the Password I first used with the new ugly, long Password the ASP page generated.

Once I saved the page, Bingo, my email was working again and I still had my 2 Step Verification in place.

So there you have it. That’s how you learn how to reconfigure your gmail email account with 2 Step Verification turned on.

Take a look at the video and you’ll see in clearer terms what you need to do.

Hope this helps and as always give this information a “tweet”,”Google+”,”Like”, “Pin”, “Stumble” and anything else you can think of. Many Thanks!

Hi Donna – Good point. Though I would try the process if it made sense with whatever email client you are using. I also use Yahoo but haven’t run into this problem.
