WordPress Categories and Site Architecture
I have always had a more difficult time appreciating the finer points of setting up a web site.
That’s why I think this video and the ones that will follow are important.
How you set up your site and how easy it is to use WordPress categories are not fully understood by a lot of people, at least when you first start out online.
I include myself in that group and that is why I have a made an effort to really think things through on paper before going to the effort of creating a site.
This video is one of the steps in the process and it is important to understand how organizing your categories can really work in your favor.
So take a look and see how easy it is to get started.
I have a transcript on the way for those of you who prefer the written word.
In the meantime, have a look and don’t forget to “tweet”,”like” or “google +1 this post. Many thanks if you do.
Here is the transcript. Read and enjoy.
Hey, Claude Pelanne here, Affiliate Starting Line. Welcome. This is going
to be a video a series of videos on categories and menus. The sub-theme is
how do you design the site architecture, the organization of your site. The
place to start is categories. You find categories, if you go to the side
bar here, under posts and hit categories. Click that. That takes you to the
category page. In this example, we have some categories we have already
created. Let’s see how you create it.
The first thing I want to point out is this. In the categories page you are
going to see names, slugs, parent and description. These are important
because these are where you name your category. The slug is the sub-title
headline that will appear in the URL. Very often, I just make the name and
the slug the same. Just to make sure that the URL carries the exact term
that I want it to carry. Below it you can set up a main category or a sub-
category and below it is a description box and then there is a tag there.
Now, I want to point out something, screen options. If you click that, it’s
going to open up what to show on the screen. If you turn these off, you are
going to see certain things turn off here on the right hand side. If I turn
on the description, it will show what the description is. If I turn on the
slug, it will show the slug.
If I click on posts, it will show how many posts are categorized or
appearing under that category. Under poker art, I’ve got one article. Poker
tables, I’ve have one. It will show you on the right hand side how much
content you have that is directly related to the category because you’ve
selected that when you created the post. That’s what this up here means.
Then down here you can show on the screen the maximum, any number of
categories. It defaults to 20. I always pick 50, that way I can see them
all on the page. You’re never going to have 50. You’re lucky if you have 10
or 15. The recommended number is 5 to 7, but that’s not really relevant to
a lot of people.
So how do you create a category? Go to category name and here is poker
accessories. I’m going to use poke accessories as a slug. That means that
when the URL appears up here in the address bar, the name of the site/this
slug, the category/then the name of the post can appear depending on the
configuration of what you’ve selected to appear in your URL. We will do
another video about that. Parent, this is going to be a main category. So
I’m going to leave it at poker accessories and down here I’m going to put a
description. Poker tables are vital to a great poker session. Put a
description a little more descriptive then that. You create your
description and then when it’s all said you can add category. You’re going
to see now that poker accessories is now appeared here with a description.
It doesn’t have any posts related to it but there might be something here
that we could do.
Poker tables is really a sub-category of poker accessories. We can click
edit. Now we already created it remember? Poker tables. We have the slug.
We haven’t created the description, we should have. We didn’t. Now I am
going to make it a sub-category, the parent category is going to be poker
accessories. Description, poker tables are vitally important, learn all the
options you have before you buy. OK. There we go. Now, down here you are
going to see some more optimization I can do because I loaded in a
WordPress plug in called Yoast WordPress SEO. I can go add all this
information as well. But for the purposes of time, I am going to move on.
You would do exactly the same process down here. Create a description.
Create a title. Create a link that would be used when it goes in to the
archives. Breadcrumbs, here is one for the breadcrumbs, you click update
and you are fully optimized. You are going to notice that now in the
categories, poker tables has a dash in front of it,and that means that it’s
a sub-category. It’s appearing under poker accessories. So now I’ve created
a main category and a sub-category. I’ve selected to show a description, a
slug, and a post. I would go back in here and add descriptions for each one
of these categories and optimize them properly. That’s the way you set up
Let’s take a look and see how people use them. There are two places you are
going to put a category. Here is a site that is a top notch site. In this
case, the categories are listed on a widget on the side. 14 categories to
lay out the site for you. That’s one way that one person does it. Let’s
take a look and see how Guru Bob does it. He’s got 11 categories. Let’s see
how a third candidate does it. Another SEO guru, specialist, very
knowledgeable. He’s got nine. We have between 9 and 14 categories on these
three different websites. All of these categories happen to be put in a
sidebar widget. Categories can also go in to menu’s and sometimes they
appear up in the navigation bar. We will talk about that when we talk about
So there you have it. Categories. How you find them, you go to posts.
Categories, how you create one, you add a name, a slug. You decided whether
it’s a name category or a sub-category, add a description and there you go.
The next video is going to be going in to your appearance and menus and
figuring out how to lay out those categories and where they should go.
That’s it. This is Claude Pelanne, Affiliate Starting Line. I hope this has
been helpful. Stay with it. Stay well and we will talk to you soon.
